Turning experience into expertise with digital marketing at postgraduate level. Meet James.
James doesn’t know how to stay put, and he’s as busy in his role as a marketing manager at Debono Group as he is in his personal life, juggling his passion for cars, music, and sports with raising a family. And yet, he managed to find the time to not only complete a postgraduate programme in Digital Marketing but also earn a distinction—all before the arrival of his second child. Here’s what keeps him moving.
Well, there have been some sleepless nights, as you can imagine. But ultimately, it’s a matter of priorities, I guess, and I knew where I wanted to go in terms of my career, so furthering my studies was non-negotiable. I covered a number of foundational courses with ICE Malta, and I went for the Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing as soon as I could make a little time for it.
As for Digital Marketing at postgraduate level, I actually had to rush the course and finish earlier than expected because my wife and I were expecting our second daughter to be born—which goes to show, really, that if you set your mind to it, it can definitely be done. I’m really grateful for the fact that the postgraduate diploma is delivered online and on-demand. Because the course is self-paced, I was able to find the best time for me to focus on my studies. Without this flexibility, I wouldn’t have been able to make it.
I really value mentorship so training with ICE Malta was a great opportunity to learn from the best in the field. I was very keen on tapping into the educators’ expertise, to listen to what the people who had done it all had to say. Even though I’d learnt a lot of stuff on my own since I’ve been in marketing for quite some time, I felt I needed a solid framework with an academic backbone to measure my skills against so that I could make sure I was on track and up-to-date. And in fact, I learnt a lot of useful tricks and had my fair share of eureka moments at ICE Malta.
Personally, I really believe in the importance of a lifelong learning mentality. I don’t want to become complacent. I’d rather push myself, which is what you need to stay ahead. Even after my time at university, I kept on studying and doing courses on my own. I believe in doing things the right way, taking the time to do things properly. This is why I eventually pursued my learning at a postgraduate level with ICE Malta. I had the experience, sure, but I didn’t want to rely solely on that, not when there’s so much to keep up with in an industry that is always changing.
Look, if you want to take your career forward, taking up this course is a no-brainer. You’re staying at the top of your game by learning more, you’re gaining the insights and the practice to boost your confidence, you have expert mentors to turn to, and a wealth of resources to tap into. In my case, I felt I was missing a sense of continuity since I’d had to change jobs a number of times, so I decided that whatever I didn’t manage to get from my own experience in the industry, I would get from learning. If it didn’t happen, I’d step up and make it happen, and that’s where the postgraduate diploma comes in.
The minute I learned about the programme, I remember, I looked at my wife and said, “This is it, I’m going for it.” The course obviously takes commitment, and things were a bit tricky at the time due to the economic uncertainty around the pandemic. But I wanted to be the best in the business, and on a personal level, I wanted to make sure that my career could support my family. With the turbulence caused by Covid-19, I felt that I wanted an added layer of professional security, which the training and certification would provide.
The course is particularly effective because the theoretical components are all supported by practical exercises. The idea is that you use what you learn in real time, while having the option to go back to your mentor to evaluate your marketing strategy as you actually implement it. And the programme is so comprehensive and thorough—think anything from management to customer experience to design—that I couldn’t find one thing that wasn’t covered. This means that you come out able to work much more effectively with different stakeholders both inside and outside the organisation you’re working in, not just the marketing team. It even caters for different tiers of professionals, from executives to directors to CEOs, which makes it a really valuable asset to have.
Thanks! Yes, so this is when I joined Debono Group, where I currently work as a marketing manager. I’m very happy where I am right now and there’s room to grow. The edge I’d gained with the course, coupled with my experience, meant that I was able to climb up the ranks very quickly within a company that is known as the best in the automotive industry.
Before joining Debono Group, I’d been in roles which were multifaceted and not solely focused on marketing. When I completed my postgraduate studies, I felt it was the right opportunity to move towards a career that aligned better with my goals. My passion is marketing. In fact, I studied management at university with a focus on marketing, and a thesis based—unsurprisingly—on the automotive industry. So I made the switch to be able to work more closely with what I love, and my move certainly paid off. I wanted a better position, a better wage, a better company, better conditions, and I got it. Now that I am in a better position to choose the right pathway for my career, the sky’s the limit.
It was great, from start to finish, even in terms of support. For example, I once had some trouble submitting an assignment—and this was literally days away from my daughter being born, so I was under a lot of pressure—and I was immediately given the assistance I needed. You just know you’re in good hands.
The team also guides you step-by-step throughout the whole process if you’re applying for any funding schemes, and they really know their stuff. Because of this, I was also able to claim back 75% of the course fees, although I will say that I would have gone for the course irrespective of the refund. I feel that what you stand to gain from the postgraduate diploma is worth the price tag, but the Get Qualified Scheme helps in making the financial commitment even more worth it.
