Adriana was working in a call centre, but her real interest was technology. “I love computers. It’s my hobby.”
So she started looking for a way in. Academic certifications were her first thought, but they didn’t work out. They took too long and needed a lot of time and money. She also needed to study part-time. “I couldn’t afford quitting my full-time job to start school.”
Then she came across ICE Campus and the Cisco IT Essentials course. She read the description and knew. “I said, OK, this is it.”
Once the course started, that feeling stuck. “This is something that I really, really like, and it was very interesting.”
Around five months after finishing the course, she landed her first job in IT, as a desktop support technician. At work, she kept recognising things she had learned.
“Lots of things that I was working with, I could recall them back from the course, which I really, really loved. I started getting more comfortable, and I told myself, OK, yes, this is it. I can do this. We can move from here on.”
Her next course was ITIL, and this time her company sent her to study. She’d had her eye on it for a while, because it’s a well-known certification and companies value it. The educator made the difference.
“The teacher, he was incredible, the way he delivered it. He made something, I wouldn’t say boring, but something very theoretical, into fun.”
When the exam came, it felt straightforward. “I kept hearing his words, and he gave us so much knowledge and preparation for that exam.”
By then, a new interest was growing: cyber security. “It’s a field that I really like.” She signed up for the Cyber Security Operations Analyst course, and was happy to see ICE Malta was part of it. After so many courses, she trusted the standard of the teaching. “I knew that the teachers must be excellent.”
The course lived up to it. “It fulfilled my expectations, because the course was incredible.”
“Taking all these courses, enhancing my skills, pushing forward and learning from all my colleagues, it led me to the profession where I feel like I belong.”
Today, Adriana works in cyber security. She got there one course at a time, starting with a hobby and a part-time course she could fit around her job.
Her advice to anyone hesitating is to try.
“You shouldn’t be scared to try it, because you might end up liking it. You should give it a try, because you never know where it’s going to lead you.”
